  • Like every superhero, cupcakes have an origin story. Here are a few things you probably didn’t know about the tasty treat.The first mention of the cupcake can be traced as far back as 1796, when a recipe notation of “a cake to be baked in small cups” was written in American Cookery by Amelia Simmons. The earliest documentation of the term cupcake was in “Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats” in 1828 in Eliza Leslie’s Recipes cookbook. Cupcakes evolved in the U.S. in the 19th century. They rose to prominence because they saved time and weren’t as likely to burn in hearth ovens. Cupcakes either got their names because they were made in cups or measured out by the cup originally. Though they’ve been around forever, they became trendy somewhere around 2011. Cupcakes have become the latest hipster chic food. The 20th century cupcake variations are endless. They range from simple to sublime. Baking papers come in designer prints. Individual portions and easy clean-up make cupcakes perennial favorites for classroom birthdays and bake sales. A survey of American cookbooks reveals the interest in cupcakes, as food in their own right, has grown over the years. Sprinkles Cupcakes in Beverly Hills, CA. was the very first cupcake bakery in the world. Since then millions of bakeries have popped up all over the country and started what many people consider a “Cupcake Craze.” Some of the most notable cupcake bakeries include Georgetown Cupcake in Washington D.C., which has a show called D.C. Cupcakes, Magnolia’s in New York, which was made popular on an episode of Sex and the City, and Crumbs Bake Shop, which is the largest cupcake chain in the United States
